The Finnish Parliament has passed a law requiring that the use of biofuels in road vehicles must reach 30% by 2029.

The target matches those set in Sweden and Norway. But Finland says its stipulation that one-third of the biofuels come from non-food sources by 2030 is the most aggressive in the world.

The European Union banned the use of biofuels made from palm oil by 2020. As a result, Finish companies such as Neste Oil have developed biofuels made from waste and residues. Used in traditional combustion engines, these fuels can cut greenhouse emissions by as much as 90%, according to proponents.
