A panel of 54 automotive journalists has selected the nine finalists for North America’s 2019 Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year awards.
Contending for the best-car award are the Genesis G70, Honda Insight and Volvo S60/V60, which were chosen from a list of 14 semi-finalists. Earlier this week the G70 sedan was named Motor Trend’s car of the year.
The utility finalists are the Acura RDX, Hyundai Kona/Kona EV and the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. The group was chosen from a dozen semi-finalists.
On the truck side, only three pickups were eligible this year: the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 along with its twin, the GMC Sierra 1500, and the Ram 1500 pickup. The latter won MT’s top truck honors this week.
Vehicles were evaluated on segment leadership, innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value. The winners will be announced at the Detroit auto show in January.
The 2018 winners were the Honda Accord sedan, Lincoln Navigator SUV and Volvo XC60 crossover.
