Fiat SpA will postpone the European introduction of the next-generation Grande Punto supermini and Bravo midsize car originally scheduled for next year until at least 2014, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The newspaper cites unidentified sources who say Fiat is slowing development of the new models to save money during the European auto slump. The revamped Bravo and Grande Punto were the only Fiat brand models slated to arrive in 2014.
The Bravo's last major overhaul was in 2007, according to the Journal. It says the Grande Punto's styling was refreshed in 2009.
Fiat has said previously that it makes little sense to introduce new models during a sales downturn. But analysts caution that an aging lineup could put the Italian brand at a disadvantage to European and Asian rivals with fresh offerings.
