Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it will transform the Fiat 500 city car into an electric-only luxury model in 2020.

Chief Operating Officer Olivier Francois tells Britain’s Auto Express that the replacement model will be significantly redesigned to appeal to an increasingly upmarket customer base. “Premium is the way we will go,” he declares, describing the upcoming car as an “urban Tesla.”
Francois also indicates that the 500’s price will rise as a result. He says FCA plans to continue to offer the current piston-powered model as a lower-cost, entry-level car.
The 500 EV will ride on a new purpose-designed platform currently under development that will make the next-gen car “radically different,” he tells Auto Express.
