Ferrari SpA plans to launch a hybrid vehicle in mid-2019 that teams a high-powered V-8 engine with an electric motor, says CEO Sergio Marchionne.
Marchionne provided no other details about the hybrid model. But media reports note that the vehicle’s timing coincides with that of Ferrari’s first SUV.
The hybrid powertrain will help Ferrari meet more stringent emissions regulations to be implemented in the European Union in 2021. Ferrari is exempt from current emissions standards because it produces fewer than 10,000 cars annually. That will likely change with the addition of the SUV.
Ferrari produced the limited edition LaFerrari hybrid supercar in 2014. That vehicle used a Formula One-style kinetic energy recovery system that teamed an 800-hp V-12 engine and a 168-hp electric motor.
The new model will use a traditional hybrid system that focuses on improved efficiency rather than boosting performance, according to Marchionne. But he says the hybrid model will maintain Ferrari’s core driving dynamics.
