Ferrari NV CEO Sergio Marchionne says the supercar brand could field a team in the Formula E series for electric vehicles in a few years.
Virtually all Ferrari cars will use some form of hybrid-electric powertrain by 2019. Although the company has no immediate plans for a full-electric model, participating in Formula E would help it refine and showcase its electrification technology.
Before Ferrari enters Formula E, the series would have to change its current format that dictates standardized electrical systems and allows for mid-race car swaps (due to limited battery driving ranges), Marchionne says. Both rule changes are expected in coming years.
