Federal marshals have seized displays of eight Chinese companies at the Specialty Equipment Market Assn. and concurrent Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo in Las Vegas, Automotive News reports.
The raids, which occurred on Tuesday, were the result of a restraining order issued by the U.S. District Court in Las Vegas. The order was obtained by Omix-ADA Inc., a Georgia-based manufacturer and wholesaler of aftermarket parts for Jeep SUVs.
Omix asserts the targeted Chinese companies were promoting copies of its patented products, including grilles for the Jeep Wrangler. In some cases, the complaint says, the companies also labeled their parts with Omix trademarks.
The raided exhibitors are among nearly 5,000 companies have been displaying aftermarket products at the two shows this week. SEMA tells AN that the six Chinese companies “will not be coming back” if found guilty of patent infringement. The judge who issued the restraining order has scheduled a preliminary injunction hearing for Nov. 10.
