A federal district judge in Detroit has dismissed a lawsuit claiming that a payoff scandal involving Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and the United Auto Workers union cheated UAW workers.
The complaint stems from a scandal in which UAW officials were compensated with gifts, lavish trips and personal payments from funds funneled from a joint company-union training center.
The lawsuit, which sought class-action status, claimed that the payoffs resulted in weaker union contracts with the company. But Judge Gershwin Drain ruled the plaintiffs failed to show they had exhausted union and contract remedies intended to deal with injustices.
