Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it will recall 443,700 of its heavy-duty pickups and medium-duty trucks in the U.S. with water pumps that could overheat and cause a fire. Another 51,000 recalled units were sold in other markets.
The callback will target 2013-2017 model Ram 2500 and 3500 large pickup trucks; and Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 medium-duty chassis cabs. All affected vehicles are equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines.
FCA blames the problem on a bearing that could overheat enough to cause an under-hood fire. The company says the condition may activate a warning light. The targeted pump is no longer being used in Ram trucks.
FCA hasn’t determined when the recall will begin. When it does, dealers will inspect and, if needed, replace the entire water pump assembly.
