Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is preparing to call back 296,000 of its Ram 1500 pickups in the U.S. to fix an airbag control module that could disable the truck’s airbags.
The recall targets corrupted software in certain 2019-2020 models. The flaw also disables the system designed to tighten seatbelts ahead of a crash. FCA says the occupant restraint controller may erase some of its own memory during normal self-maintenance conducted when the ignition key is off.
FCA is preparing a repair but expects to begin the recall in July. Dealers will either reprogram the corrupted flash memory or replace the control unit.
