Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV will suspend production at its minivan plant in Windsor, Ont., through the first two weeks of January, according to Canadian union Infor.
The plant normally employs about 6,000 people. They have been building Chrysler Pacifica (pictured) and Dodge Grand Caravan minivans on a three-shift schedule.
Infor didn’t indicate why the extra eight days of down time will be tacked onto the Windsor plant’s usual holiday shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day. But Automotive News notes that FCA idled the facility last January to adjust inventories.
Demand for Pacifica and Grand Caravan models in the U.S. rose 2% to 109,400 units and 10% to 142,200 units, respectively, through the first 11 months of 2018, according to AN.
The newspaper says average dealer inventories of Grand Caravans are at a healthy 29-day supply. But stockpiles of Pacifica vehicles are at 91 days—about three times the normal level.
