Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is launching two recalls to repair defects in the airbag systems in 1.9 million Ram pickup trucks.
The larger campaign will replace a steering wheel wiring harness that could short-circuit and cause the driver's front airbag to deploy unexpectedly. The callback covers nearly 1.1 million 2012-2014 model Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 series trucks in the U.S. All effected models are equipped with an optional Electronic Vehicle Information Center display.
FCA also is recalibrating overly sensitive sensors in 843,500 of the same Ram trucks from the 2013-2015 model year. The sensors could trigger the seatbelt pretensioners and side airbags if a door is slammed shut. The company says the problem is more likely to affect four-door crew cab models. The recall covers 667,400 Ram trucks in the U.S. and 176,100 units located overseas.
