FCA Readies Recall Trucks to Fix Rollaway Problem

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is preparing a global recall of 228,500 of its Ram trucks to fix a flaw that could allow the transmission to slip out of Park unexpectedly.
The callback targets 2016-2018 model Ram pickup trucks and chassis cabs with shifters mounted on the steering column. Most of the affected vehicles are in the U.S. and consist of heavy-duty 3500, 4500 and 5500 models.
FCA blames an interlock system that is supposed to prevent the transmission from being shifted out of Park unless a key is in the ignition and the driver presses the brake pedal. The company says the mechanism can overheat and stop working if the brakes are applied over a long period while the truck is idling with its transmission in Park.
FCA hasn’t indicated when the recall will begin or what will be done to fix the problem. The company isn’t aware of any crashes or injuries related to the flaw.
