Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says it will spend some €9 billion ($10.5 billion) through 2022 to electrify enough models to meet regional emission limits.

But CEO Sergio Marchionne says the mix will vary sharply by market. Most of FCA’s plug-in and all-electric models will arrive in 2020. By 2022, more than 30 of the company’s models will offer electrified powertrain options.

The carmaker also will offer an array of small turbocharged gasoline engines, Marchionne adds. He confirms the company intends to stop selling diesels in Europe, Africa and the Middle East by 2021.

FCA predicts that by 2022 some 35% of its sales in the U.S. will be electrified models. Marchionne anticipates the same ratio in China. In Brazil, he adds, no electrification will be necessary because of the country’s extensive use of ethanol fuel.
