The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has ordered Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV to notify 371,000 of its customers no later than Dec. 1 that it intends to replace defective Takata Corp. airbag inflators in their vehicles.

FCA decided on the recall in June. But it didn't plan to tell affected owners about the campaign until Dec. 19, when dealers would have replacement parts in stock.

NHTSA says there is no reason to delay notification. Last week Deputy Administrator David Friedman groused to reporters that the agency has prodded Chrysler on other occasions to speed up the recall process.
