FCA Moves to Block U.S. Sale of Lookalike Jeep

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has filed a complaint to block India’s Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd. from selling SUVs in the American market that closely resemble FCA’s iconic Jeep model.
FCA’s petition to the U.S. International Trade Commission asserts that the Mahindra Roxor is a “nearly identical copy” of the original Willys Jeep and infringes on FCA’s own Jeep.
Last year Mahindra opened a U.S. headquarters outside Detroit and is preparing to assemble the Roxor in Michigan from imported kits. In November Mahindra announced plans to build a 400,000 sq-ft factory for the SUV.
Mahindra is India’s largest producer of SUVs. The company reportedly has held a license to assemble Jeeps since 1947, currently built under the Mahindra Thar brand. The Roxor is a modified version of the Thar that, among other things, avoids the FCA Jeep’s seven-slot grille.
