Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is more than doubling to 1.1 million units a U.S. recall of Ram pickup trucks whose tailgates may suddenly fall open while being driven.

The expanded campaign involves certain trucks with 6- or 8-foot load beds and a power locking tailgate. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says a component in the lock may break, allowing the gate to drop down and dump the truck’s unrestrained cargo.
The original recall, which began in May, covered 2015-2017 Ram 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks. In October, FCA will notify another 693,000 owners of 2013-2015 and 2018 version of all three models.
