Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV has added 13,100 Maserati luxury cars in the U.S. to its global recall of 1.1 million vehicles equipped with confusing gearshift mechanisms.
The 2015-2015 models are the Quattroporte and Ghibli sport sedans. The cars use a “Monostable” electronic shifter that consumers say makes it difficult to determine whether a stopped vehicle is in Park or not.
The shifter uses a display to indicate the chosen gear. But its lever springs back to a “home” position after each selection rather than mechanically moving from one detent to another as conventional shifters do.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has described the e-shift system, which has been linked to more than 200 crashes and dozens of injuries, as “not intuitive.” FCA’s previously announced recall covers 2014-2015 model Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2012-2014 Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger sedans.
Last Sunday “Star Trek” actor Anton Yelchin was killed when his recalled Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled forward and pinned him against a brick posts and security gate.
