Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV is adding 88,300 of its 2008-2010 model Dodge Challenger sedans to its previously announced recall to replace some 4.5 million Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode when activated in a crash.
The new callback covers driver-side devices only. FCA says the Challengers were "inadvertently excluded" from a recall in May of sedans, crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks made between the 2004 and 2011 model years.
The earlier recall covered airbag inflators for the driver, passenger or both including about 50,000 devices that had been replaced previously. FCA said last month it would source most of the new inflators from ZF TRW Holdings Corp. rather than Takata.
