Today FBI agents raided several facilities connected to the United Auto Workers union, including the homes of its current and former president, according to media reports.
The raids are part of a continuing federal investigation into payoffs, bribes, kickbacks and other crimes involving the union and the car companies with which it has labor contracts. Nine people from the UAW and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV have been charged or convicted to date.
Reports say federal agents raided the homes of UAW President Gary Jones outside Detroit and former President Dennis Williams in California. The FBI also searched the UAW’s Black Lake Conference Center in northern Michigan.
The raids come as the UAW is trying to negotiate its next four-year labor agreements with General Motors, Ford and FCA. The union’s current pacts will expire in mid-September.
The UAW says there was “absolutely no need” for the searches, because the union and its officers have pledged to cooperate fully with investigators.
