Volkswagen AG is recalling nearly 109,000 cars in Canada and the U.S. to look for faulty camshafts with a lobe that could shear off, reducing engine power and disabling the car’s power brake assist.
The targeted cars are powered by 1.8- and 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline engines. The vehicles include 2015-2016 model Jetta and Passat sedans, Beetle coupes and convertibles, and Golf hatchbacks and sport wagons.
VW says 91,800 of the vehicles are in the U.S., and about 17,000 are in Canada.
The problem is the rear cam lobe that is used to operate the power braking system’s vacuum pump. If the lobe shears off, an engine warning light illuminates and the brakes quickly require more pedal pressure to work.
