Volkswagen AG’s Bentley Motors unit is developing a sporty derivative of its new Bentayga luxury crossover/SUV.
If approved, the new model could be introduced in the next two to three years, CEO Wolfgang Duerheimer tells reporters. He says the vehicle will help Bentley attract younger buyers and stay ahead of such competitors as Lamborghini, Maserati and Rolls-Royce as they expand their own crossover/SUV lineups.
The sporty derivative will ride on the Bentayga’s MLB-Evo platform, which also will carry the redesigned Audi Q7 and next-generation Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg. Exterior styling hasn’t been finalized, with several internal teams competing on the design. One possibility is a fastback crossover that takes cues from last year’s EXP 10 Speed 6 concept coupe, Duerheimer says.
Bentley touts the Bentayga, which is launching globally this spring, as the industry's first ultra-luxury SUV. The vehicle will have a base price of $230,000 in the U.S.
