Business and consumer confidence in the eurozone economy slipped in April, marking the second straight month-on-month decline, according to Eurostat.
The EU statistics bureau's Economic Sentiment Index fell to 88.6 this month from 90.1 in March. A 1.2-point increase in consumer confidence was outweighed by declines in the industrial, retail, services and construction sectors.
Sentiment fell 2.3 points in Germany, 2 points in France and 1.9 points in Italy. Spain bucked the trend with a 0.9-point improvement.
Economists say the downturn in confidence increases the likelihood that the European Central Bank will cut interest rates when it meets on Thursday.
