The European Union has given Volkswagen AG until the end of December to detail the impact of some 800,000 cars the company sold in Europe with understated carbon dioxide emission ratings, Automotive News Europe reports.
The EU originally ordered VW to submit the analysis by Nov. 19. The company so far has identified 430,000 of its 2016 model Audi, SEAT and Skoda vehicles affected by the false CO2 readings, which inflate fuel economy ratings.
VW told the EU it needs more time to accurately identify affected cars and recalculate their true CO2 emissions. The company said previously it will shield owners by paying the higher European road taxes that result from the revised data.
The CO2 scandal is separate from VW’s admission that it doctored 11 million vehicles to cheat nitrogen oxide emission tests. But some vehicles may be affected by both problems.
