The most fuel-efficient version of Chrysler Group LLC's new Dodge Dart small car has received an official highway rating of 41 mpg by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The ratings, which the EPA had estimated in December, satisfy a government requirement that granted Fiat SpA an additional 5% ownership stake in Chrysler in return for producing a car in the U.S. that delivers at least 40 mpg. Fiat acquired the additional stock in January.

EPA rates the Dart Aero with six-speed manual transmission and turbocharged 1.4-liter engine at 28 mph city/41 mpg highway. The same front-drive model with a six-speed automatic has a 28/40 mpg rating.

The Aero package squeezes out slightly better fuel economy because of aerodynamic enhancements that include underbody paneling, "spats" in front wheel wells, a rear spoiler and an active radiator grille shutter system.

A standard Dart with the same engine is rated at 27/39 mpg with manual transmission and 27/37 mpg with an automatic. EPA rates models powered by Chrysler's optional 2.0-liter engine at 25/36 mpg for with a manual and 24/34 mpg with an automatic.

The 1.4-liter engine requires premium-grade gasoline; the 2.0-liter powerplant runs on regular fuel.
