Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 262,000 cars and SUVs in the U.S. to fix a software flaw that could cause the engine to stall without warning.
The campaign covers 2019 model Mazda3 small cars and 2018-2019 model CX-5 compact crossover vehicles and Mazda6 midsize sedans (pictured).
Mazda says the abrupt stalling is caused by a software flaw in the engine cylinder deactivation system. The technology is designed to save fuel by deactivating some cylinders and their valves under low-demand driving conditions.
But the software that controls the system may incapacitate valves when it shouldn’t, which could cause the engine to stall and prevent it from restarting. Dealers will fix the problem by reprogramming the necessary software.
Mazda plans to begin the recall at the end of August.
