Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Alfa Romeo unit will stop producing its entry-level MiTo car in July, reports Motor.
The Spanish website notes that European demand for the MiTo shrank to 11,000 units lasts year from a high of 62,000 in 2009, the car’s first full year on the market. Deliveries have collapsed in some countries this year, with first-quarter deliveries in Spain shrinking to just 33 units.
Alfa builds the MiTo at its plant in Mirafiori, Italy. When the car’s production ends, an unspecified number of workers will be transferred to the company’s Grugilasco, Italy, facility, according to the report.
Motor says there are no plans for a direct successor to the tiny hatchback. multiple media reports say FCA may eventually transfer the MiTo name (a contraction of Milan and Torino) to a new city crossover vehicle.
If the MiTo is discontinued, the Giuletta hatchback will become Alfa’s entry-level model. That car, which was launched in 2010, competes against the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series.
