Volkswagen AG has confirmed it will unveil the production version of its all-electric Golf small car at the Frankfurt auto show three weeks from now.

The e-Golf, which was shown in prototype form in March at the Geneva auto show, will be available as a three- and five-door hatch.

The front-wheel-drive car is expected to go on sale in Europe early next year at a retail price around $53,800. Previous reports said the EV may debut in the U.S. at the end of 2014.

Specs for the prototype describe an electric motor that makes 113 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque. Power comes from a 26.5-kWh lithium-ion battery housed under the rear seat and trunk floor.

The EV is likely to weigh roughly 500 lbs more than a standard piston-powered Golf. The prototype can accelerate from zero to 100 kph in 11.8 seconds and reach an electronically limited 85 mph.

The car will be able to drive about 110 miles under normal conditions. Two increasingly frugal operating modes extend range by reducing power and top speed.
