A Colorado-based maker of electric commercial trucks has completed a series of tests that transferred 60 kW of power from grid to EV and back again.

Boulder Electric Vehicle of Lafayette, Colo., says the tests, which were conducted in California, Colorado and Michigan, are significant because they used production rather than prototype vehicles and involved as much as 10 times the power transfer typical of previous vehicle-to-grid demonstrations.

BEV says it will begin adding vehicle-to-grid technology in January to electric trucks produced at a factory the company is building in Los Angeles.

A 2011 study by Pike Research predicted that plug-in EVs will be plentiful enough by 2017 to help provide power needs in some areas. The Boulder-based firm pointed out that the load-leveling effect of such a system could eventually be more attractive than building traditional power generating equipment.
