Some 88% of new vehicles worldwide will be equipped with electric power steering by 2023, according to a new report by just-auto.com’s Qube research arm. It says such systems are installed in about 75% of new vehicles today.
Electric power steering systems consume less energy than hydraulic units, thus help to improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency. The technology also can be integrated with other electronic systems to improve safety, the U.K.-based research firm says.
Future growth will be aided by increasing sales of electrified and autonomous vehicles that require electric power steering, the forecasters note. Suppliers also are evaluating new materials to help reduce weight and further improve the steering system’s efficiency.
But the authors say the added cost of the technology will limit near-term adoption in some emerging markets, which will continue to use hydraulic power steering.
