Eaton Corp. says its new TVS2 supercharger is more than 25% lighter and as much as 10%-16% more efficient than the company's previous superchargers. The new unit enhances fuel economy by tapping less power to operate.

Eaton says a new rotor design improves the supercharger's internal aerodynamics. Key changes include reducing the clearance between rotors, modifying rotor twist to optimize efficiency and new porting features that eliminate unnecessary air compression.

Low-speed airflow also has been improved by more than 30% to enable greater low-end torque, according to the company. It estimates that coupling the new supercharger with a turbocharger could boost the output of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine to 380 hp and more than 350 lb-ft of torque.

To withstand the high-pressure environment of a compound-boosting environment, the TVS2 system uses high-pressure seals. It also has an increased airflow range, thanks to a full ball bearing system that enables peak speeds of 30,000 rpm 25% higher than with current superchargers.

A new backflow port is used to reduce noise caused by the higher speeds and increased boost pressures. And a micro-perforated panel enables targeted noise treatment, resulting in as much as an 8 dB reduction at low speeds.
