Dual-Clutch Transmission on Tap for Hotrod Mustangs?
Ford Motor Co. plans to add a dual-clutch transmission option to its Shelby Mustang GT350 speedster and GT350R track-only variant in coming years, according to the enthusiast web site Mustang6G.com.
Ford Motor Co. plans to add a dual-clutch transmission option to its Shelby Mustang GT350 speedster and GT350R track-only variant in coming years, according to the enthusiast website Mustang6G.com.
Introduced last year as a 2016 model, the current GT350 /GT350R duo teams a 5.2-liter V-8 engine with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The latter will continue to serve as the base transmission, Mustang6G says, without citing its sources. Road & Track says it agrees with Mustang6G about the dual-clutch application after reviewing unspecified “evidence” from the website.
It isn’t clear if the dual-clutch unit would be a 6- or 7-speed system. Several of the GT350’s competitors already have switched to dual-clutch transmissions, including the BMW M3, Ferrari 458, Porsche 911 Turbo and Nissan GT-R. The next Chevrolet Camaro will use the 10-speed automatic transmission that General Motors co-developed with Ford.
