BMW AG is evaluating the use of dual-clutch transmissions (DCT) for its new front-wheel-drive vehicles, according to BMWBlog.com. Such models currently are available with a choice of a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Without citing its sources, the Bimmer-focused Web site says BMW could launch a front-drive DCT in about two years. It suggests that initial applications could include high-end variants of BMW’s X1 crossover and Mini John Cooper Works subcompact. The site notes that DCTs allow for faster shifting that better reflect the performance targets of these models.
Volkswagen already offers DCTs in some of its performance-oriented fwd models.
