The U.S. Dept. of Energy is spending $6 million to fund 11 community-level projects to familiarize consumers with alternative-fuel vehicles.

The programs will be conducted in 10 states. Five projects will enable consumers and fleets to test such vehicles for extended periods. Five more will train first responders, tow truck operators and repair facilities how to safely handle alternative-fuel vehicles.

The final project will develop an educational curriculum about new-energy vehicles and distribute it free online.
