Automotive designer and entrepreneur Henrik Fisker has teamed up again with Los Angeles-based Galpin Auto Sports, this time to create the Galpin Rocket Speedster Concept. Based on a Ford Mustang GT Mustang, the Rocket Speedster features a two-seat convertible layout and a supercharged 725-hp version of the Mustang's 5.0-liter V-8 engine.
Following up last year's Rocket coupe, the partners unveiled the concept model at the recent Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance classic car show. They also announced plans for a limited production run for the coupe, which will start at $109,000. Similar plans are expected for the Speedster.
The convertible, which was constructed by GFMI Metalcrafters, Inc. in Fountain Valley, Calif., sports a lightweight carbon-fiber body and a pronounced rear deck. To help reduce drag, the Speedster's air outlets have an integrated mesh directly behind the driver and passenger.
Performance upgrades include a fully adjustable independent suspension, Brembo brakes with 15-inch discs and 21-inch wheels shod with Pirelli P-Zero tires.
Fisker, who had been a designer for Audi and BMW, launched Fisker Motors in 2008 to build high-end electrified vehicles. The venture filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and was purchased last year by China's Wanxiang Group, which hopes to resume production of the stylish Karma hybrid coupe.
