Detroit Electric Inc. says it intends to initially launch sales of its $135,000 (€102,500) SP:01 electric sports cars in Europe and Asia. The Dutch company plans to supply those markets from its existing factory in the Netherlands.
Detroit Electric, which said in April it would begin assembling the SP:01 in suburban Detroit by August, has indefinitely suspended those plans. The company is still awaiting federal approval to begin sales and production in the U.S.
Detroit Electric encountered some "operational headwinds," according to Don Graunstadt, the company's North American president. He says Detroit Electric is trying to improve the SP:01's aerodynamics to meet its performance promises.
The company also is creating an electrified version of Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd.'s Emgrand EC7 sedan to sell in China.
