Detroit Electric Holdings Ltd. has released a photo of a production version of its SP:01 electric sports car, which is expected to go on sale next year for about $135,000.

The rear-drive car was shown in concept form at the Shanghai auto show in 2013. The production model replaces the prototype's flying buttresses with a fastback roofline and large rear wing. Other aerodynamic improvements include an underbody diffuser and reshaped front air intakes and outlets for the HVAC system.

The 2,400-lb two-seater shares its architecture and general appearance with the Lotus Elise. Equipped with a 201-hp electric motor mounted midship, the car will be able to scoot from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph, according to the company. It says the SP:01's 37-kWh lithium polymer battery can be charged in as little as 4.3 hours using a home charging unit.

Detroit Electric plans to begin assembling the car in Leamington, England, next spring. The facility is expected to supply markets in Asia, Europe and North America.

The company has no dealer network. It also has altered its manufacturing plans at least three times since the company was revived in 2008 by former Lotus Engineering Group CEO Albert Lam.
