Denso Corp. is opening a research and development center for advanced safety systems on the University of Michigan’s main campus in Ann Arbor.
The lab expands Denso's partnership with U-M, extending an alliance agreement established in 2012 to sponsor multiple r&d projects. As part of the new program, 12 U-M students will work with Denso on research projects through the end of the year. The focus will be on machine learning, advanced driver assistance systems, and connected and autonomous vehicle technologies.
Denso describes the lab as a simulation environment with high-speed computing and high-capacity data storage capabilities. Simulation will be conducted on high-performance computers and mechatronic systems, including an advanced driving simulator.
Denso also is working with students on U-M’s Dearborn, Mich., campus to learn more about car-sharing services. Participants in that program, which was launched last month, have access to three Ford Focus electric vehicles that they can drive anywhere in the U.S.
