Denso Introduces a Better Pedestrian-Collision Sensor

Denso Corp. says its new pedestrian-collision detection system is faster and more accurate than traditional sensors. The technology is being used in Japan in the current Toyota Crown hybrid.

The detection system is linked to Denso's pop-up hood feature, which elevates the hood upon impact to increase buffer space between the hood and hard components, such as the engine, beneath.

Conventional collision sensing techniques use three or more acceleration sensors affixed to the back of the front bumper. But Denso says their speed in detecting a collision depends upon where the bumper is struck.

The new Denso system uses two pressure sensors and a hollow polyethylene tube that fits behind the entire bumper. The company says the sensor can precisely detect an increase in air pressure within the housing as the bumper deforms, regardless of where the collision occurs.
