Delphi Automotive plc has struck a deal to turn over documents about its role in the General Motors Co. ignition-switch recall in exchange for being dropped as a defendant in lawsuits against the carmaker.
Delphi also will allow plaintiffs' lawyers to talk to its employees about the switches, which it made to GM specifications and supplied to the company. In February GM recalled 2.6 million vehicles to replace the switches, which can abruptly turn off the engine and disable the airbags.
The documents Delphi is releasing include copies of e-mails from GM last December placing an urgent order for 500,000 replacement switches two months before announcing the recall.
Neither Delphi nor plaintiffs' lawyers has offered details about the deal.
