Daimler AG is recalling 42,800 of its Smart ForTwo two-seat minicars in the U.S. to replace material under the hood that could overheat and catch fire.
The callback targets certain 2008-2009 coupes and Cabrio models. The problem involves an insulation mat located in the engine compartment near the catalytic converter.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the mat can deteriorate and loosen over time, come in contact with hot components of the exhaust system and ignite without warning.
Dealers will replace the mat with a new one made of sturdier materials. Daimler plans to notify owners about the issue this month and again in June before the recall begins later in the summer.
