Daimler AG is recalling 147,200 of its Mercedes-Benz E- and CLS-Class cars in the U.S. to more firmly attach a rubber engine compartment seal that could drop onto the engine and catch fire.
The campaign covers 2013-2015 model sedans and wagons. The seal fits on the top edge of a rear bulkhead of the engine compartment. A design change in the part made it more difficult to install at the factory, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
If the seal isn't properly seated, it could stick to the hood when the hood is raised, then drop onto the hot engine and catch fire. Dealers will install four additional retaining clips to hold the seal in place.
