Daimler AG and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV are recalling 42,700 trucks and vans in the U.S. to replace Takata Corp. airbag inflators that could explode in a crash.
The campaigns will call back 40,100 Sprinter 2500 and 3500 model vans made during the 2005-2008 model years. Daimler will handle models marketed under its Freightliner brand, and FCA will recall Sprinters carrying the Dodge brand.
In both cases, dealers will replace the passenger-side frontal airbag. The companies have not yet scheduled a start date for the recalls.
Daimler also is recalling 2,600 of its 2008-2009 model Sterling Bullet 4500 and 5500 (rebadged medium- and heavy-duty Dodge Ram pickup cab chassis) trucks to replace the drivers-side frontal airbag. The callback is expected to begin in August.
