British racing engine maker Cosworth says it will construct a $30 million factory 20 miles north of Detroit to make high-performance cylinder heads for V-8 engines.

The facility, expected to open in Shelby Township in 2018, will supply the components to an unidentified but nearby maker of high-performance road cars. The company hopes the facility eventually will produce other components and serve additional customers.

Cosworth was formed in 1958 by former Lotus Engineering employees and initially supplied racing engines to Lotus. The company changed ownership several times.

Over the past 30 years Cosworth has built Formula One racing engines for Ford/Jaguar, Haas Lola, Minardi, Williams, Torro Rosso, Red Bull and Marussia. The company also supplied engines to the IndyCar and Champ Car racing series in the U.S.
