Continental AG tells Automotive News Europe it expects demand for advanced driver safety systems to increase from today's €1 billion market to as much as €10 billion by 2020.
Friedrich Angerbauer, head of Conti's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems unit, tells the online newspaper that the explosive growth will result from a rush by automakers to comply with new safety regulations in Europe, Japan and North America. He says the immediate focus is on Euro NCAP rules that take effect in 2014, which aim to protect vehicles and pedestrians from collisions.
Angerbauer predicts that the market for anti-collision technology will soar to €2 billion-€4 billion by 2017.
Conti offers such systems as emergency braking assist, lane departure warning and a technology that autonomously steers cars around pedestrians when necessary.
