Continental AG says it will open a $1.4 billion plant in Clinton, Miss., by the end of 2019 to make commercial truck and bus tires.

The company didn’t announce the plant’s initial output. But it describes the facility as a “gradually growing tire plant” that will employ 2,500 people by the time it reaches full capacity in the next decade.

Conti, which already operates five tire plants in North America, says growth in its commercial tire business in the region has outperformed the market over the past five years. The company’s Continental and General brands currently account for about 8% of the North American truck tire market, according to Tire Business.
