Continental AG says its third-generation electric drive system is smaller, lighter, less expensive and more efficient than previous versions.

The company’s Vitesco Technologies powertrain unit has begun producing the new system at its factory in Tianjin, China.

The first applications are for electric vehicles built by PSA Group (the Peugeot e-208 and Opel Corsa-e) and Hyundai Motor Co. (the Encino compact SUV and Lafesta sedan) through its joint venture with China’s BAIC Group.

German startup Sono Motors GmbH also plans to use the new e-axle in its upcoming Sion EV. Other unnamed carmakers will launch EVs with the system over the next year, according to Vitesco.

The supplier says its third-generation system improves the interaction between the electric motor, power electronics and transmission. The latter includes an electric parking lock function.

Vitesco claims the unit provides best-in-class power density, size and weight. The integrated electric motor and liquid-cooled power electronics module weighs less than 80 kg (176 lbs) and can generate as much as 200 hp and 230 lb-ft of torque.

Continental renamed its powertrain unit Vitesco last year and may divest the business. Options under consideration include a partial initial public offering and a complete spin-off.
