BMW AG has added an M performance variant to its X4 compact crossover lineup. The new all-wheel-drive X4 M40i features a more powerful engine, sportier tuning and unique styling.
The twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine kicks out 355 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque, propelling the premium crossover from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds a half second faster than the previous top-line X4 35i. Top speed is electronically capped at 150 mph.
Adapted from the 35i's straight-six, the new M model engine gets an upgraded crankshaft, pistons, bearings and air intake to handle the additional power. A new exhaust system features active valve control and a performance resonator that generates a throatier note.
The engine is mated with an 8-speed paddle-shifted automatic transmission. Suspension upgrades include stiffer springs, reinforced stabilizers, active dampers and increased camber on the front axle. The variable steering system also gets M tuning.
Other performance enhancements include larger front brake discs and an increased rear bias for the awd system. The M40i will ride on Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires with optional 20-inch double-spoke wheels.
Exterior changes include new accents on the front bumper, upgraded side mirrors, larger air intakes, a new rear diffuser and dual tailpipes with chrome black tips. The interior features a leather steering wheel, M gear shift lever, sport seats and door sills with M40i badging.
Sales in the U.S. start in February.
