Members of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada have voted by a 9:1 margin to merge with the Canadian Auto Workers union.
CAW members approved the arrangement in August. The new union will represent about 325,000 workers, thus making it the country's largest private-sector union.
CAW and CEP officials say the merger will give them greater clout in fighting wage cuts, other concessions and unfavorable legislation. The new entity plans to devote about $10 million per year on organizing, twice the combined current spending of the two groups.
Leaders from the two unions will meet at a founding convention next year to decide on new group's constitution, leadership, structure and name.
