Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV says its Chrysler brand will debut plug-in versions of its minivan and new large crossover vehicle in 2015 and 2017, respectively.

But FCA tells investors it will add the models to comply with zero-emission requirements and not because of consumer demand for such technology.

Electrification, declares Bob Lee, who heads Chrysler's engine, powertrain and electrified propulsion systems engineering, "has been overblown by the media." He claims the market for such powertrains is driven mainly by regulatory mandates.

Lee says FCA's powertrain strategy will focus on lowering fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from piston-powered vehicles. He says doing so will combine powertrain refinements with lower vehicle weight, improved aerodynamics and reduced tire rolling resistance.
